The way to understand art is to go and look at it. And if out of a million visitors there is even one to whom art means something, that is enough to justify museums ( Pierre Auguste Renoir)
"Art is a lifetime matter. The best any artist can do is to
accumulate all the knowledge possible of art and its principles, study
nature and practice continually." (Edgar Payne, 1883-1947)

A Little bit of Heaven in Orono

Today the Plein Air Thursday group went to Orono to paint. A friend of Fred Irons, Lisa, has a garden that would make you green with envy. Lisa is an artist herself and the garden has her personal touches such as fountains and arbors and fruit trees and berry bushes, not to mention the exotic flowers mixed in with standard Brown Eyed Susans'. What a display of color and a treat for the eye....an oasis in the middle of the town. I arrived at 10am and didn't want to leave

Lisa, Fred and neighbor Betty

After roaming aimlessly around  on visual overload I finally decided on an place to plant my easel. I painted a garden tool shed that was so adorable and another painting of a sun flower looking happy as could be to be planted right in that spot.  Painting in this garden was so much fun.

Michelle Walker found a large green vessel that was made into a fountain surrounded by flowers to paint. Her use of pastels captured the vessel and the soft red flowers hugging the pot. She used many layers of pastels to accomplish the color of the vessel. Beautiful job Michelle.

Liz Donald painted a garden of large white flowers that bloom in the evening...they must have been confused because they were in full bloom. Along side of the white blossoms were magenta and  yellow Zinnias  and a tomato and vegetable  garden arched in plastic to keep out the deer. Her painting captured the  beauty of this little part of the garden.

Fred Irons did his first Plein Air painting and he rendered a painting to be proud of! His great use of color enabled him to capture the feeling of the exquisite gardens and the  glorious sunny day.

PAT's go to Corea

Plein Air Thursday group just returned from Corea...Maine. This is a beautiful ,small ,quiet coastal fishing village. The PAT's got together with instructor Linda Packard for a day of painting. After meeting at Shaw's parking lot we c"ar pooled and drove nearly 2 hours to land in Corea. After scouting the area for the perfect spot we decided on an in town" location to paint. After a morning of scouting and painting we then returned to our friends cottage and had lunch on the deck in the warm sunshine. The weather was perfect. No humidity, in the 70's and clear skies...not a drop of rain in sight.  ( could this be our Thursday??)
The afternoon was spent on the dock watching the Lobster boats return to the harbor and painting our hearts out. See pictures below of our painting day in beautiful Corea, Maine.

We're off and running!

We're off and running with our new blog. Plein Air Thursdays (PAT) pastel group was held at the Hammond St. Senior Center because of a prediction of rain.  Even though it didn't rain it was hot and muggy. It felt really good to be at the HSSC and see everyone. Fred even dropped by to say hello...we've missed you this summer Fred. Fred has been extra busy this summer with concerts every 2.5 days.  The PAT group is going to go to Fred's last concert of the summer held at the Bangor Bandstand behind Paul Bunyon statue. Concert starts at 7pm. Bring you chair and meet at the statue at 6:45pm (Fred, I promise we won't throw our underwear on stage!)
Michelle Walker painted a wonderful painting of her Great Grandfather's homestead. I didn't get a chance to get a picture before she left for the day...it really was expressive.
Gigi did some magical paintings, her usual. She paints several paintings from black and white pics or a nothing photo and magically transforms them into a spectacular paintings.(Its called talent.)

Jean worked on a painting of the Kenduskeag River. She  captured the feeling of nature in this painting. The Kenduskeag never looked so good.

Liz finished a plein air painting of Indian Point , Ellsworth. I loved the color she used and the focus on the church was the focal point. The painting was rich with color which added to the charm of the painting. Glad it didn't get too wet last week.

Pricilla painted her painting from a very difficult perspective, looking up through the trees. She captured the hight of the trees as well as the depth. Great job on that painting.

Rita painted a barn scene. This was from her recent trip to Monhegan where she has now embarked on the shed of Monhegan series. Great use of color,Rita. This makes me want to go back to Monhegan.

Gloria painted a beautiful painting of a sunset sky. The oranges and yellows were a great contrast of the dark foreground.  Beautiful!

Carol painted several paintings. One was a  seagull on a rock, another was 2 adarondak chairs on the lawn and the last one was a home on Monhegan. I can't decide which one was my favorite because they were all teriffic.

Then there was me...I finished some paintings that were left. One was a warf in Lubec, another was the Penobscot River, and the last was a painting from Indian Point.  I was happy to finish them. Now you can help me name them!
Got any good ideas?

Next few pictures are of the group at the Senior Center and at Lunch.
