The way to understand art is to go and look at it. And if out of a million visitors there is even one to whom art means something, that is enough to justify museums ( Pierre Auguste Renoir)
"Art is a lifetime matter. The best any artist can do is to
accumulate all the knowledge possible of art and its principles, study
nature and practice continually." (Edgar Payne, 1883-1947)

Fall Winds Blow

October blustery winds blow as the Plein Air Painters group paints inside. The wind blew in some friendly faces, Priscilla and Liz. It was so good to see Priscilla up and about again...can't keep a good woman down. Priscilla may come next week to paint.
Liz visited and will be back next week to paint with us. She brought her little poodle, Bioux, along to visit with us. Great to have her back.
Sheila has been sick with the flu....hope she's feeling better. She also got her cataract's done so life should be looking clearer.
Terrie will be with us next week after a trip to Italy with Rita and Charlene. Terrie bring you pictures...we want to see, you too Rita.
Gail, hope your finding your way....stop in and visit, we would love to see you.

Here is our Priscilla !!!

Sue painted this scene using acrylics. This is the base for the painting which is in progress.

Gigi painted this Bangor spire using acrylics. Her brilliant brush work is
evident in the sky and clouds which is juxtaposed agains the hard
architecture of the building. The perspective gives the viewer the
feeling of looking up at the church spire. Wonderful Gigi!

This is Gigi's sketch which she used to paint the acrylic. This painting is in watercolor.
The soft, airy trees are in contrast to the churches architecture. Great Job, Gigi!

This is a little gem painted in oil by Charlene. The Mananna Island near Monhegan is
mysterious. The composition is wonderful . The viewer is drawn into the painting by the ladder and
then led further in with the buildings. Fabulous Charlene!

Gloria painted this shingle from her barn. She is experimenting with painting on wood and the rough surface
is a challenge as is the hole in the board. This winter scene is in her yard. She is having
fun painting this...the painting is in progress. So far so good.

Charlene is blocking in her painting of a house on Monhegan. She under-painted with an orange acrylic and
has layed in the sky with oil paints. Can't wait to see the finished painting!

Paintober

Yes this has been the month to paint plain-air. The warm weather and gorgeous color makes for a perfect combination for painting outside. Gigi and Sue did get out earlier in the week to capture
some beautiful scenery on canvas.
Sue painted this scene using acrylics. This was painted plein air at the pond in Avalon Village.
Sue ramped up the color...maybe a bit too much.

Gloria painted this thatched roof Irish cottage using pastels. The open door lends a mystery as to what
is beyond. Beautiful Gloria.

Gigi painted this scene plein air scene on the banks of the Kenduskeag River using acrylics..  The colorful
fall folliage  and rushing water are artfully done with her beautiful strokes. Fabulous Gigi!

Another scene of the Kenduskeag River painted by Gigi using acrylics. Her brush strokes lend a movement
to the water and create interest. Wonderful, Gigi!

Sue painted this scene "The road to Sandy Point" using acrylics.

This week was a beautiful day to paint. Fall is  in the air and the colors are now at peak. Brilliant.
Nancy came back this week after taking the summer off. She moved...need I say more. Unpacking boxes and organizing things and now painting and papering rooms. She was one busy lady.
Great to have you back Nancy.
Well wishes go out to Priscilla...I hear the boot is coming off soon...and it won't be long before you will be back at art group.
Charlene, Rita and Terrie are back from Italy...so far we've see Charlene.
Liz is busy in Rockport at the Barbara Jackson Gallery selling her paintings. She will be back with us before too long.
Michelle has been busy with family and visitors and traveling...hoping to see her soon.
Carol has been among the missing....she is selling lots of houses so she hasn't had much time to paint.
Gail has been busy and hopefully we will see her soon. We miss you all.

Here are some of the paintings we did this week.
Nancy set up this still-life and it was in honor of her grandfather. He loved to read and garden, in
fact her grew flowers to sell to the wealthy families that came to Acadia in the summer. She even has his photograph
behind the book. Nancy, He must be looking down on you today and smiling at this tribute.
The painting has a great composition and the the shadows are soft and interesting. The colors are
beautiful. Fabulous job, Nancy!

Linda stopped in to visit and Gigi is showing her some of her paintings.

Gloria

Gigi painted frogs this week...several of them. She painted this bright frog among the weeds. She used acrylics to
paint this frog. The colors are bright and happy....love it Gigi!

Gigi painted this frog using acrylics. The movement in this painting is great along with the brushwork.
Great Job, Gigi!

Gigi painted this happy frog using acrylics. Her background is interesting and colorful and sets off her
subject very well. Ribbit. Ribbit....Love it Gigi!

Gloria painted this thatched roof barn and stone wall using pastels. This Ireland scene is cozy and the the
barn shingle effect is interesting. She is painting on drawing paper...very difficult to do, but she is
turning out a beautiful and interesting piece. Lovely, Gloria.

Colorful Season

October brings some colorful countryside for us to paint and it surely is an inspiration for us all.
This week we had a few returning artists friends, Gloria and Charlene. Gloria took off the summer and Charlene just returned from 3 weeks in Italy.  Charlene had a wonderful time in Italy told us all about her travels. She brought a painting that she had done in Italy and I posted it for you to see.
Sheila painted this little fella using watercolor. She had started it last week but needed to wait for
things to dry. She is almost finished. Beautiful, Sheila!

Gloria sketched this scene of a thatched roof barn an stone wall. Lots of angles in this
scene but she took on the challenge and  managed quite well. Great Job, Gloria!

Charlene painted this Tuscan scene using coffee....yes, the kind you drink. She boiled it down to a syrup and
then painted this beautiful notan. Fabulous, Charlene

Charlene painted this country side scene of Italy using pastels. She captured the rolling countryside of Tuscany
with a great contrast of color. Fabulous Charlene...I want to go there!

Sue painted this still-life using oils.

Sue painted the garden of her friend, Happy, using acrylics.  The goal was to paint loose and use
unexpected colors.

Sue painted this Hampden Marina scene using acrylics.  Again, the goal was to paint loose and
use unexpected colors.
