The way to understand art is to go and look at it. And if out of a million visitors there is even one to whom art means something, that is enough to justify museums ( Pierre Auguste Renoir)
"Art is a lifetime matter. The best any artist can do is to
accumulate all the knowledge possible of art and its principles, study
nature and practice continually." (Edgar Payne, 1883-1947)

We Give Thanks

During this busy holiday period the Plein Air Thursday Group has taken the time to bring in some items  from the Centers "need list". They were very appreciative of our giving spirit. Thank you for all that you have done.
The group has been busy working on paintings, some are doing series and others are working on
technique.
Several members of the group painted benches for the Discovery Children's museum, Carol, Liz Gigi and myself. I do want to note that Gigi's bench was featured on the front cover of the brochure. Congrats to Gigi… I will bring in the brochure for all to see.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
This weeks paintings:
Gigi painted this bug painting using oils. This close up version is an interesting perspective.
The shapes are varied and create an flow throughout the painting. Fabulous, Gigi!

Gigi and Virginia

Sheila painted this scene using watercolors. She is still working on this and I can't wait to see
the finished piece. Great job so far, Sheila

Sheila painted this pumpkin using watercolors. The variations in the colors on the pumpkin are beautiful.
The shadows are also multicolored. Love this one, Sheila….Great Job!

Sheila painted this still-life using watercolors. The tomato has great depth and roundness.
The bottle is fabulous…love all the colors you used. Wonderful Sheila!

Linda and Charlene ponder their paintings before the critique.

Michelle sketched this piece last week using charcoal. She finished the reflections and
the painting came to life. Beautiful, simple composition that just shines with you touch.

Michelle sketched this old family barn using charcoal. The value scale is very good on this piece and it makes the
painting have depth and shadows. Just Fabulous, Michelle.  Also love the story behind this piece !

Charlene painted this Monhegan cottage using oils. The warm colors in the pathway lead the viewer into the
picture. Charlene used various greens to create a summer atmosphere in this painting. Just Beautiful Charlene!

Terrie captured this old Tuscan building on canvas using acrylics.  The blue door is inviting and those dark windows
are very intriguing . You certainly captured the nature of Tuscany in this painting. Great job, Terrie!

Linda is painting a series of Maine granite pieces. She painted this piece using pastels.
The subtle colors in the rock make the viewer feel the solid nature of this stone. The flowers growing
out of the granite is a great juxtaposition of soft and hard elements. Another successful
painting, Linda. Gorgeous!

Sue worked on this large piece "Top of Cadillac" using acrylics. This painting is in progress.

November- Giving Back Month

We are well into November and the chilly weather is upon us. The Art room was warm with excitement and creativity.
We decided as a group to bring in some things that the Center needs, such as:
Tin Foil
Stamps
Wet and dry Swiffer refills
Ziploc Bags (1 gal. size and 1 quart size)
Liguid handpump bathroom soap
items for "Its a Basket Case" fundraiser
Colorful/festive party plates and napkins
Leave things at the desk with Tracy and let her know that it is from our group.

The following week we will bring in non perishable  food for the poor.

We were still missing a few people…Priscilla, Terrie, Gloria, Gail, Carol, and Nancy.

This week was a busy one.( My apologies to Gigi, she painted this great Light House and somehow I deleted the photo, along with mine. Anyway if you could bring it in next time I will be sure that it gets put on the blog. I promise!)

Here are the results of this weeks session:
Rita added the finishing touches to this market scene. The colors pop! Fabulous Rita!

Rita with her pastels

Linda painted this piece of granite at the quarry using pastels. The organic quality
of the painting is delicious! This stone is beautiful.  Wonderful Job, Linda!

Liz is painting the interior scene with sun flowers. The composition is very interesting with all the angles and
the sunflowers are bright and uplifting. Fabulous job, Liz

Charlene is painting the Monhegan cottage using oils. Her technique is unique in that she paints from the top down.
I know this is going to be beautiful!   The light in the window adds to the piece. Fabulous job, Charlene!

Sheila painted these colorful fall leaves using watercolor. Her colors are beautiful and they blend into each other
to create another color….just fabulous, Sheila!

Sheila painted this winter scene using watercolors. The white birches are the centerpiece of the painting but the
soft edges that she created on the fir trees is a wonderful contrast to the straight birches.
Wonderful Sheila!

Michelle drew this scene using charcoal. The values in the painting are exceptional and the suggestion of
the greases is all she needed to set off this painting. Love it, Michelle! Great Job.

Sue finished this stormy scene using acrylics.

Creativity Abounds

The art room was humming with excitement today. Brushes were flying across the canvases and the pastels were pumping as the group got down to some serious work.
This week we had a visitor, Judy Graebert and she will be joining us on Thursdays to paint. She lives in Stockton Springs and is an architect. Some of us met her in Susan Toby White's classes. You will find her a delightful addition to our group.
Missing Sheila, Gail, Linda,Carol, Gloria and Nancy. Hopefully they will attend next week.
Now for the art…some wonderful pieces were created.

Such a simple composition can be beautiful as seen here. Fabulous painting, Michelle

in her darkest areas. Today she painted in the sky and the top of the building. The painting has greatness.
