The way to understand art is to go and look at it. And if out of a million visitors there is even one to whom art means something, that is enough to justify museums ( Pierre Auguste Renoir)
"Art is a lifetime matter. The best any artist can do is to
accumulate all the knowledge possible of art and its principles, study
nature and practice continually." (Edgar Payne, 1883-1947)

Ice and Cold

Ice and cold did not deter Plein Air Thursday Artist…in fact I think it contributed to their
creativity.
Here is the collection of their art:
Terrie sketched her design using graphite. This is the design she will put on the
ceramic item for Bangor Art Society. Beautiful design, Terrie!

Is that Terrie behind those Foster Grants??!!

Gigi painted this city scape using acrylics. The loose brush strokes and color
make this piece very interesting. Love the colors!! Fabulous, Gigi!

Gigi painted this fisherman using acrylics.  The colors of the sea and the paint thickness makes the water
appear rough and wavy. The figure is in an action pose and depicts the typical life of a Maine
fisherman. Very nicely done, Gigi!

This pastel painting was created by Michelle. The red barn against the contrast of the pale sky is
very dramatic. The foreground is interesting and the light color bring the grasses forward. Great values
in this painting.  Beautiful, Michelle!

Carol painted this Tuscan scene using oils. The stone stairs are rendered so that they convey a mystery as to
where they are going. The plants and the darkened doorway also is inviting the viewer into the painting.
Great color and composition in this painting….Fabulous Carol!

Charlene painted this fun sea creature using watercolors. The blending of colors did not show in this photo but they
are there and they are beautiful… This was the design that Charlene will be painting on her ceramic piece.
Love it, Charlene!

Arctic Vortex Color

This week our group attendance was small but we did produce some beautiful paintings. The January Arctic Vortex temps ( below zero with high winds) did not deter these few brave souls of the Plein Air Thursday ( now on Tuesday) group.
Here are the results of our creativity.
Gloria's painting of a rock wall is in progress. She painted this using acrylics. Th composition is interesting
as the viewer is drawn in to the window to see beyond. Great job, Gloria.
Hi Gloria!

Sheila painting watercolor

Nancy painted this unique view of a roof top using acrylics. The lines of the roof make for a very interesting
perspective. The warm and cool colors she used set the painting. The values in this painting draw the viewer up to
the roof top. Wonderful Nancy!

Terrie painted this coastal scene using acrylics. The composition is interesting and draws the viewer from the
two small boats directly to the house. Terrie used glazes to accent the light in this painting. Fabulous, Terrie!

Terrie painted this scene using acrylics the fish house is this warm color drawing the viewer into the painting. The
background rocks and boulders are nicely rendered with cool colors to recede. Beautiful, Terrie!

Terrie painted this Tuscan scene using acrylics. This countryside has lots of rolling hills and Terrie has
painted them in cool colors to recede. This work is in progress. Great job, Terrie!

Sheila painted these cows using watercolor. The beautiful colors did not photograph well but I assure
you they are there. The grasses are amazing with the pinks and greens. This painting is in progress.
Great job, Sheila!

Michelle painted this mid-western barn using pastels. Michelle used this pale yellow
sky to set off the building and it works very well. The barn is an architectural
marvel with its tall structure. Michelle captured the feeling of this barn using color.
Fabulous, Michelle!

Sue painted her grandson, Josh, sitting on his bed, using acrylics.

New Year with New Changes

The new year is about change. This season we are meeting on a different day, Tuesdays.  I know it doesn't work for everyone but it works for most of us.  We will leave Thursdays open for plain air painting. I already have a trip planned for the spring….Sandy Point Beach.  Just something to look forward to.
Our first session on Tuesday went very well. We connected to our creative side and painted our hearts out. Here is the results.

building going off the page. Wonderful shadows define the recessed section of the barn.
Wonderful, Charlene!

essence of this scene. Fabulous sky!  This is such a great painting, Sheila.!!

Sue painted this figurative using acrylics. This is just the blocking in stage…just the darks.

Big Changes for 2014

Thursday was the first day back from our holiday break and it was great to see everyone!
The new year brings big changes for our painting group. Kathy Bernier came in to talk to our group.
She has scheduled another class at our time in the art room. Since we are not an actually class we had the option of:
A…. moving our day to Tuesday afternoon at the same time
    or
B….. move to Friday afternoon at the open art room time 1-4pm and others people would be able
to come in and paint. (could become very crowded)

We voted and the consensus was that we would meet on Tuesday at the Center at 1pm-4pm.
This would allow us to save Thursday's to paint outside when the weather is good.

If you would like to weigh in on this issue please email me.

As to our painting this week… we had a good group that produced some fabulous results.
Gloria looking glamorous.

Gloria's drawing of a rock wall that she will paint. The drawing is rich in line and texture giving the rocks a
solid presence. Great job, Gloria!

Carol getting started.

Liz stopped by for a quick visit.

Liz, Terrie and Priscilla discuss the paintings in the critique

The line up for critique

Priscilla, Charlene and Carol make comments during the critique.

Charlene painted this Italian city scene using watercolors. The people in
the scene make an interesting contrast to the tall buildings. Charlene,
will be adding the sidewalk cafe on the right . This is going to
be a gem, Charlene. Fabulous job.

This beautiful Orchid was painted by our very own Georgia O'Keef….Sheila. The colors are such beautiful mixtures
and the values are strong. You've got a winner her, Sheila. Beautiful!

Sheila painted this geranium using watercolor. The value structure is so great in this painting. The many greens of
the foliage and the red flowers are wonderful. The pot itself is really beautiful.
Sheila, this is fabulous work!

Nancy painted this landscape using acrylics. She layers many colors to get this beautiful glow in her paintings. The blue in the hills are inviting but keep in the background because of their cool undertones. The warm color
grasses welcome the viewer into the painting. Kudos to you Nancy for creating such a lovely paining!

Carol painted this Monhegan garden scene using watercolors. The colors are warm and inviting and
the rock wall adds definition to this lovely painting. Great job, Carol!

Michelle sketched this farm scene using charcoal. The stark shape of the silos are in direct
contrast to the lines in the barn. The mystery of the dark door invites the viewer into this
beautifully rendered drawing. Fabulous, Michelle!

Sue painted this scene of the view on Beach Hill Pond. This was a request and to make the paining more interesting she added the clouds and reflections

Sue painted this Sandy Point scene during the holidays. She used extra heavy body acrylics to paint
the snow for a more 3 dimensional effect.

Terrie painted this Newfoundland scene of the boat house on the water. The colors are beautiful and the rocks in the foreground add weight to this painting. She will be changing the rock structure on the back right side to a lighter
version so to have them recede .Great Job, Terrie!

Sue painted this Maine coast scene using acrylics…this is just the first pass.

Priscilla painted this square to make a background for her painting. This green is a cool color and
will recede when  she paints the foreground. So far, so good, Priscilla.
