The way to understand art is to go and look at it. And if out of a million visitors there is even one to whom art means something, that is enough to justify museums ( Pierre Auguste Renoir)
"Art is a lifetime matter. The best any artist can do is to
accumulate all the knowledge possible of art and its principles, study
nature and practice continually." (Edgar Payne, 1883-1947)

From Van Gogh to Matisse

Today we painted in the HSSC. It was a beautiful day to paint outside however the consensus was to paint inside.
On today's post you will see some paintings that have a very Van Gogh feeling and some that have a very Matisse quality. (Master painters are not too shabby to be compared to) . By emulating these styles one can learn so very much.
Sheila painted this landscape using pastels. She used the light
to create this vivid and alive composition. Beautifully done,Sheila!

Sheila painted this "Van Gogh"like painting
using pastels. Her use of vivid colors and interesting
shapes made for a very interesting composition.
Beautiful contemporary art!

Sue painted this scene of Bangor using oils. The light in this
painting is key to it's success.  This painting is
in progress.

Nancy painted this idilic scene using pastels. The
hint of car tracks in the grass lead the viewer right into
the painting. Nancy captured the light on the tree that is
the focal point of the painting. Fabulous, Nancy!

Rita painted this coastal scene using pastels. Her composition is
interesting with only a portion of the boat in the painting. (good cropping) Her
strokes also adds texture making for a very successful painting.
Great Job, Rita

Sheila painted this adorable little guy using watercolors.
The painting is not quite finished but Sheila is well on
her way to a successful piece. Wonderful, Sheila

Liz painted this explosion of flowers..this week she added
the rod iron gate. The effect is a great because it defines the
painting. Love the composition and the color!

fun and the shadows are very interesting. Great composition and
wonderful painting, Nancy.

Nancy painted this view of a barn with window boxes that are
bursting with flowers. (oils) The shadows add such
intrest to this painting.

Rita painted this scene using pastels. The texture in this
painting is very nice as well as the colors. Makes you
want to stroll down this road! Beautiful Rita.

Road Trip

Plein Air Thursday group hit the road and headed to the beautiful town of Castine. Being a painters paradise, Castine is a small community located on the ocean. Barb Mallonee made arrangements for us to paint in the Wilson Museum. ( If you haven't gone it's worth the trip) The staff welcomed us and provided coffee and fruit. Barb baked homemade cookies for us (yummy). The fog rolled in and rolled out so often that we weren't sure if the boats were really in the harbor or if they had sailed away. However the sun cleared away the fog just as we headed to Baha's for lunch. We had a delicious lunch and then went back to the Museum to finish up our paintings.
Here are the results of our fabulous day in Castine:
